"I CAN !" Gym
 |
 |
“I CAN !” organised the first gym session for asthmatic children at Fitness First, Paragon Shopping Centre. At the session participants were briefed on the different possibilities of sports, including gym and fitness training. The advantage of gym training is that it is effective on different aspect of body condition and that it can be performed under supervision (by trainers) and under controllable circumstances (in gyms). |
The session on Sunday, 19 September was a successful one. About 30 children, between 7 to 14 years old, attended the session. They were all enthusiastic and actively participated in the different gym activities, which included: cardiovascular training (for physical condition), muscle training (to strengthen the muscles) and joint training (to become more lean). Furthermore, the children had the opportunity to discover the gym and explore the different fitness machines. Everyone, including the parents, had great fun!
"I CAN !" Sail
 |
 |
At the “I CAN !” Sailing Clinic on Sunday, 13 June 2004, about 30 “I CAN !” participants turned into sailors for the day at Changi Sailing Club.
It was amazing to see our young participants taking on the dual challenges of overcoming their medical condition, and venturing out to sea without any prior sailing experience. It was also remarkable that the children were taught sailing skills by the physically-handicapped members of the Singapore Disability Sports Council! |
Exercise and being outdoor with great company certainly brought much benefits to their health and overall well-being.
Swimming Clinic @ SingTel Recreation
The Children's Asthma and Allergy network ("I CAN !") kick started their sports activities for children with asthma and allergies with a Swimming Clinic on the 21 December at the Singtel Recreation Centre.
The activities were led by Mr Ang Peng Wee, a swimming coach and ex-national swimmer, together with some of our current national swimmers including Mr Leslie Kwok and Mr Ernest Teo.

The children aged 5 to 15 year were treated to a time of fun and games in the pool together with demonstrations of professional swimming techniques by Mr Leslie Kwok who himself is an asthmatic- certainly a very inspiring session for the participants and their accompanying parents. The objective of this session is to give these children (and their parents) an opportunity to experience the fun of swimming and encourage them to participate in sports. |
The "I CAN !" programme emphasizes the importance of a normal healthy unrestricted lifestyle despite asthma and allergies and wishes to provide the patients not only with knowledge but also the opportunities to experience some of these sporting activities through these sports clinics. Exercise is very important for every growing child, not only for the physical growth but also for psychological well-being. Children with asthma and allergies should and can participate in sports activities as long as their condition is well controlled. Swimming was chosen for the first session as it is well recognized that swimming is least likely to trigger asthma symptoms in susceptible children.
The "I CAN !" programme is planning to organize these sports clinics on a regular basis and will include a wide variety of sports activities. Do look out for our notices in the future and do join us in saying "I CAN !" to a healthy active life!

The "I CAN!" Workshop for
Primary Care Physicians and Clinic Assistants
The Children’s Asthma and Allergy Network emphasizes the promotion of education in childhood asthma and allergies not only to patients and the public but also to the primary healthcare providers. One major effort is our series of regional workshops for general practitioners and clinic assistants. The most recent session was held at the Tampines Safra on the 8th April 2004. Deliberately kept to a small exclusive group to enhance interaction and discussion, over 16 general practitioners (including paediatricians) practicing in the vicinity attended an interesting and practical session based on clinical case illustrations. The clinic assistants, numbering over 15 as well, attended a concurrent session in a separate function room where they were trained on the techniques of inhaler administration together with practical hands-on experience. The whole programme was carried out through lunch, which was provided buffet-style, and received very favorable comments and feedback from the attendees (CME points were awarded as well). This programme continues in the next quarter in the northern part of Singapore. A total of six such sessions are planned for this year alone in various parts of the island. Look out for our next session in your neighborhood!
