Asthma is a chronic disease of the lungs.

It affects the airways in the lungs and causes them to become inflamed and hyper-reactive.

Allergens (eg. dust mite allergens) and pollutants (such as the haze) as well as viral infections make these airways swollen and increase secretion production. As a result, the muscles around them tighten and make the airways narrowed.

Breathing becomes difficult and a characteristic whistling noise (commonly called wheezing) is produced.
